Nick was trying his best not to toss and turn the way he usually did, but he just couldn’t settle into sleep. It was past midnight, and he was wired. Too many thoughts churning in his brain, too many impressions and questions and embarrassing memories popping up, forcing him to run hot and cold and hot again.

Next to him, Dex was still, his breath steady.

Nick ran a hand over his forehead, turned onto his side, closed his eyes again.

The futon was hard and squeaked whenever he moved, which made him cringe, which made him aware of every movement, which made him tense, which made it impossible to fall asleep.

Oh, God. He wanted to be back home. At least, back in Dex’s bed in London. In his dorm would be ideal, but that certainly wasn’t an option.

The second he thought it, he felt bad. He just—he’d always had trouble sleeping in strange places. Lying in his boyfriend’s parents’ study in the countryside of England certainly counted as the strangest place yet, apart from maybe their first night in America.

He tried to focus on good thoughts, the nice ones that didn’t make him want to bolt out of bed and run all the way back to the comfort of Mile End.

Dex had introduced him as his boyfriend. Nick squirmed, felt himself smiling in the dark. He hadn’t—he hadn’t been expecting that. They hadn’t yet put a name to the thing between them, for all that it was true. They were dating. Obviously. Why, then, had it been such a surprise to hear Dex say it?

No, not a surprise. A pleasure. A dark sort of pleasure that felt like possessiveness. Not on Dex’s part. On Nick’s. He had wanted so much to pull Dex in, then, kiss him, grind up against him, oh, God, he had to stop thinking this particular thought or he’d have a boner to deal with on top of everything else.

He squirmed, did his best to shift as quietly as he could onto his stomach.

What other things could he focus on that would help him sleep?

He didn’t know. Everything else felt a little too slippery, a little too precarious. He’d talked too much. He had been trying to emulate Izzy, the way she seemed to talk without second-guessing everything she said. It was like she had absolutely no problem with anything that came out of her mouth. He didn’t have her confidence. But he had done his best to pretend like he did. Nick didn’t know if anyone bought it. He certainly had not.

Another thought slithered in—what had been the point? Short-term, it was good not to give himself away as an awkward freak, but was there any point to putting themselves through this if they were just going to part in such a short time?

His mom and Zoya’s trip was looming, and Nick still hadn’t told Dex about it.

All the anxiety that he had been attempting to ward off swirled in his gut, coalescing into a ball of such dread, he had to swallow past a knot in his throat.
